Gift ideas

The common procedure in South Africa for families adopting for the second (or third) time is for the first child to get to go into the room and meet his/her sibling first, just ahead of the new child being carried in to meet its parents. I think that's great! It gives the older sibling something to look forward to, as both a special privilege and a special responsibility, and it starts their special sibling bond right from the start.

I am not sure if that is going to work with Esther, since she is so young and might feel insecure with the new surroundings and new people, but we are going to try it if she seems up to it at the time. Thankfully she will understand the ladies at the adoption agency since they will be speaking English! It would be great if she wants to go in and meet Sylvia first, but no problem if she doesn't want to because of not quite understanding what's going on yet. Either way will be fine with us!

But I thought that she might want to give Sylvia something when she goes in to meet her or sees her for the first time, so I found this little dolly that I had stashed away. (Esther isn't very interested in dollies or stuffed animals. They're just not her thing). Isn't it cute?!

And then recently a cyber-friend of mine suggested that not only should Esther have a little sister gift, but that Sylvia could give Esther a big sister gift (not at the same time, but a bit later on in the day) to make Esther feel very special too. That's a great idea as well!

Now the question is what on earth to get for Esther. She isn't really into all that many toys. Seriously, her favorite things on earth are people, in all shapes and sizes, so basically she is getting THE GREATEST GIFT EVER by getting a little sister. But, hopefully I will think of something. It can't be too big (we can only bring 3 suitcases to SA), because otherwise I would have gotten her a little tricycle or scooter or skateboard. I had already gotten her some cool stuff to celebrate her Adoption Day (June 2nd), but that will just have to wait until we come home.

Any suggestions are welcome for a special gift for a 2.5 year old who isn't very into toys! She does like things that make noise, though!

We gave our son a gift from his sister, too. It was three books ,which we could read when time went to slowly. He loves those books!!!

princess dress-up clothes, a play phone, or a tea set! those are all very social toys. I recommend the tea set the most because then she can play tea time with mama, papa, and Sylvia!

Ooooh. Too bad you wouldn't have room for a toy vacuum cleaner. But why stop with a toy one? ha ha. An apron, oven mitts, measuring cups & spoons so that she can "help" in the kitchen? Plus give her some special mommy & Esther time. One of my most treasured possessions is a cookbook that my mom gave me when I was quite young. That would be a great follow up gift someday when she's older.
